Independence Community College cosmetology students put their classroom skills to work behind the scenes, helping with cast makeup for Neewollah’s production of FROZEN.

The collaboration connected students with community theatre and provided an opportunity to apply their training in a live production setting. Their work supported the cast’s transformation into character while highlighting the role cosmetology can play in the performing arts.

“Opportunities like this give our students a chance to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in a different setting,” said Chelsea Bailey, ICC Cosmetology Director. “They get to practice their skills, work with new people and see how their creativity can contribute to something our community enjoys.”

For Daniel McDill, an ICC employee who played Olaf in the production, the experience also brought a connection to campus backstage.

“It was great getting to see ICC students involved and share their talents as part of the production. As both an ICC employee and a cast member, it makes me proud to see our Pirates out in the community doing what they do best. Being part of a Neewollah tradition like this and seeing our students help bring these characters to life is a great reminder of the talent we have right here at ICC!”

The project offered students a look at how their cosmetology training can translate to work beyond the salon while giving them a meaningful way to participate in a local arts tradition.

“We want our students to see the possibilities that come with their training,” Bailey said. “Being involved in community projects helps them build confidence and experience while sharing their skills with others.”
